Blackheath

Just a quickie to record that while on the train heading into central London today I saw a green, fairly large stinkpipe sticking up behind a wall right next to the railway line, just past Blackheath station.

Now I need to go back with camera, GPS device, and independent means of transport (bicycle).

  1. The railway from Blackheath to Lewisham is built over a stream, the Kidbrooke I think: you can still hear it after heavy rain from the platform at Blackheath station. At Lewisham it will have joined the Quaggy and Ravensbourne. Neil Rhind's books about Blackheath, available in local shops, has a pre-railway map.

  2. It's good to hear you say that as we had a similar theory a few years back, that in some cases the stinkpipes follow the route of old rivers, now underground, and often former sewers.
I might head down to Blackheath way one wet night to hear for myself the sounds of the subterranean Kidbrooke flowing beneath my feet.
